Does Alcohol Cause Cancer?

Alcohol is now the third leading contributor to premature death and is linked to the deaths of 1.8 million people worldwide every year.

How alcohol impacts upon your health

It compromises your ability to intake nutrition (by reducing the bacterial population of your gut), it can have a negative effect on your immune system, and being a solvent, it is able to promote genetic change. On this basis, almost any illness you can get is made more likely by a high-level consumption of alcohol, and, by the same token, any illness you may already have is typically made worse by it.

As a result, alcohol has been implicated in increasing your risk of:

  • cancer
  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • obesity
  • infertility
  • osteoporosis and more

Alcoholic drinks such as red wine, are often viewed as being less harmful, due to high levels of antioxidants and phytochemicals, but the exact same health benefits can be obtained by eating red grapes.

Of course, long-term studies on alcohol consumption indicate that low levels of consumption pose minimal risk to your health, so your consumption of alcohol is a personal choice.

In a study of over 105,000 women, researchers discovered that those who consumed 3 to 6 glasses of wine per week were 15% more likely to receive a diagnosis of breast cancer. Those women who drank fewer than three drinks per week, did not statistically increase their risk at all. On that basis, the occasional glass of wine or cocktail was not an issue, it was the repeated ongoing consumption of alcohol that triggered the increase in risk.

If you have already been diagnosed with cancer, it is recommended that you do not drink alcohol at all.
