Garlic – Health Benefits and Cancer Prevention

Although garlic may have developed a stigma due to its aroma, it is a food with a number of cancer-fighting compounds. Garlic contains selenium, which can block early stage breast cancer and contains organosulphur compounds that have many health benefits, including inhibiting cancer.

Is garlic good for you?

Well, over 20 studies have shown that garlic has a range of anti-cancer effects, with particularly strong evidence for the prevention of prostate and stomach cancers.

A recent study involving over 1000 healthy female twins also uncovered the fact that women who consume diets high in garlic, leeks and onions (known as allium vegetables) have significantly lower levels of osteoarthritis in their hips, knees and spine. It is believed that this is due to a compound called diallyl disulphide which limits cartilage-damaging enzymes.

Garlic also has been shown in studies to boost immunity by stimulating natural killer cells, it reduces the risk of atherosclerosis, heart disease, stroke, colds and flu and has been found beneficial for those suffering from stroke, bronchitis, asthma, stomach ulcers, worms, and more.

One of the main ingredients that yields the greatest health benefits from eating garlic is a substance called allicin. However, allicin is not actually present in garlic. It comes from the alliin in garlic being mixed with an enzyme in garlic called allinase. This happens when the garlic is chewed, cut or bruised.

Alternatives to garlic

If you want to be sure you get the benefits of garlic on a daily basis without actually eating it, you can consume a supplement, but be sure to use allicin powder extract, because garlic powder, garlic oil, and garlic tablets do not typically contain much stable and bioavailable allicin.

According to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2001, when numerous brands of garlic supplement were tested, 83% of them yielded less than 15% of the potential allicin.

Garlic macerates contain a low level of allicin, but allicin powder extracts are much better – greater even than consuming garlic itself.
